Apocalyptica Concert !

We saw these guys at the Marquee Theater last weekend. $15/ticket, and no warm-up band. Which on a Sunday night is a plus, actually. The doors opened at 6:30; we got there around 7:00, and we still had to stand around an hour before they played. That is uncool on a Sunday night. Nevertheless, by 9:30, we were on our way home. . Apocalyptica is a metal band, who love to do Metallica covers, and who substitute cellos for guitars. One guy sits the whole time to play, but the other three lug those big cellos around all over the stage. They also had a drummer, who was way too loud, and a guest singer on 4-5 songs, who was nothing to write home about. . Overall, it was well worth the $15, and we got to see our very first mosh pit. Some people drink way too much energy drinks. The obligatory encore song was Hall Of The Mountain King, which happens to be my favorite Apocalyptica song. This was the last stop on their 2008 North American tour, and I imagine they were going to be very happy to be heading back to Finland. . Oh, one last thing. When the theater parking lot attendant tells you to turn around and go back across the street to the parking garage there, LISTEN TO HIM! Do not drive out the opposite exit onto what appears to be a two-lane highway. That actually is half of a four-lane divided highway, and when you turn left on it (to head towards that parking garage), you will instead find yourself driving into two lanes of oncoming traffic, and without anywhere to turn off!

I love mosh pits. I probably wouldn't survive one now, but back in the day, I had a lot of fun in those.

someday, you'll have to explain to me the joy of moshing. i recognize that if i ask about its logic, you'll tell me there isn't any. but what motivates someone to mosh?

Hm...depends on the type of moshing. I never got into circle pits, where people just run from side to side and beat each other up, but crushed together jumping type pits, those I liked. Part of it was just being part of a body of people all moving at the same rate, sort of like a communal connection. It didn't matter who you were touching, because everyone belonged together. Part of it is just moving along with the music, like any other dancing. Part of it, for me, was just being able to let go, which is not something I ever do in real life.

Of course, I'm totally out of shape now, and jumping up and down by the beat for an hour is just totally out of the question.

I did have a friend that liked the beating up circle pits, and I imagine there's sort of a Fight Club mentality involved in those. i don't get it. Then again, I have no coordination, so I couldn't duck or hit properly anyway.

well, i'm assuming this qualified as a mosh pit. it was just an empty (so to speak) circular area, with about a dozen young guys in it. they moved in a sorta circular motion and kept chest-bumping each other.

i didn't notice how they formed the circle. there were people standing everywhere at the start of the concert. then later i noticed the mosh pit, cuz it was dead center left-to-right, and maybe halfway back thru the crowd.

i'm glad they didn't decide to build it where i was standing cuz i would've been totally clueless as to what they were trying to do.

They build sort of randomly, and very suddenly. The ones I saw didn't have chest bumping, though. They had people ramming into each other pretty hard. Then the circle would close and everyone would be pressed together again.

at the start of the concert, there were two college-aged guys in front of us who seemed to be practicing blows and counterblows in slow-motion. at the time, i thought it was just out of boredom, but they were later part of the mosh, so i'm guessing now that they were "prepping".

it's hard for me to imagine moshing being random and/or sudden. but i didn't see it form; i just noticed it later out of the corner of my eye. next time, i'll know what's going on and snap some pics.
