Hurricane Jimena

This is Hurricane Jimena. And that's Baja California, dead in her sights. And Baja California is just across the border from the Arizona city of Yuma. . This means Phoenix will get in a tizzy yet again about a hurricane hitting us. Not that that's ever happened, but hey, there's always a first time. Right. There's a small matter of a couple hundred miles of dry desert between Phoenix and Yuma. Hurricanes don't like land, especially deserts. . Even if Jimena makes a beeline for Phoenix, all we're going to get is some clouds, and maybe a few sprinkles. But for the next couple days, the hurricane will dominate local news. . Now you'll have to excuse me. I have to go put sandbags around my house.

I saw that this was headed straight up to AZ and wondered if everyone would get a bit paranoid where you're at. They get paranoid here, too, but I think that's because the evacuees always come here. Personally, I'd welcome a hurricane. We need rain desparately.

oh yeah - it's great for the local headlines - "Hurricane Menaces Phoenix".

the worst that could happen is that Yuma would get a couple inches of rain in a 24-hour period. localized flooding, homeless people drenched, etc.

then there's the fact that hurricanes tend to wander wherever they please. so Jimena could just as easily head up the Pacific coast or (most likely) out to sea.

but in the meantime, we'll cringe in fear of 100-mph winds and 10-foot tidal surges in Phoenix. yeah.
