As Rafferty strolled toward Tenth Street, he found it hard to get Addie O'Donnell out of his mind. She had certainly made quite an impression, burning with the sort of white-hot idealism that only the young can manage gracefully. That alone made her worthy of Rafferty's regard, for he had been the same way once, eager to turn the bitter seed of the world into fresh, bright fruit. It couldn't be done, of course, but there was poetry in the attempt...
