Book Excerpt for the Day

The second disappointment was personal.  As had been prearranged, he and Burden-carries-Far spun a random-numbers disc, and Looks lost.  He did his best to conceal his unhappiness, congratulating his colleague, who was appropriately apologetic for having won.  Burden offered the honor to Looks, who formally declined, whereupon a joyful Burden sorrowfully prepared to open the hatch door and be the first to set foot on the Shirazian surface.

Book Excerpt for the Day

Chee presumed these radio blind spots were caused by the mountains but there were other theories.  Deputy Sheriff Cowboy Dashee insisted that it had something to do with magnetism in the old volcanic necks that stuck up here and there, like great black cathedrals.  Old Thomasina Bigthumb had told him once that she thought witches caused the problem.  True, this part of the Reservation was notorious for witches, but it was also true that Old Lady Bigthumb blamed witches for just about everything.

Book Excerpt for the Day

    “It’s a SETI site.”
    “SETI?”
    “Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.”
    “Oh, right.”
He talked quickly.  “We’ve spent forty years now listening for radio whispers from the sky.  But that’s twentieth-century thinking.  If you were an ETI, and you wanted to learn something about the Earth, what would you study?  What better than the Internet?  It’s by far the largest, most organized information source on the planet.”
I said carefully, “You imagine aliens are logging on.”
“Well, why not?  You’d learn a lot more about humankind than by sticking a probe up the rectum of a farmer.”

“All right,” I said to Barry.  “I won’t make any more fuss about taking the job.  This is a very big adventure and I suppose I should be grateful to my future self for suggesting me.  Because, after all, my future self must remember everything that the me now did in this time and if it was truly horrible he could have said that he didn’t want his younger self to get involved and so I wouldn’t be here, would I?”

There was a certain silence in my head.

“Barry,” I said, “are you there?”

“Yes, I’m here chief.  It just got a bit busy and confusing in here for a moment.”

On location for Glamour in Key West, my roommate was a former Miss Universe who convinced me to try her prescribed amphetamines.

“Are you sure they won’t make me feel weird?” I asked.  “And aren’t they addictive?”

“Not at all,” she answered.  “I take them every day.”

Book Excerpt for the Day

My office is in a building in midtown Chicago.  It’s an older building, and not in the best of shape, especially since there was that problem with the elevator last year.  I don’t care what anyone says, that wasn’t my fault.  When a giant scorpion the size of an Irish wolfhound is tearing its way through the roof of your elevator car, you get real willing to take desperate measures.

Book Excerpt for the Day

“What did she call it now?  Yoga!  Yes, that was it!”

    “And then?” asked Lucia.

“Well, it appears you must have a teacher in Yoga or else you may injure yourself.  You have to breathe deeply and say ‘Om’ –“

    “Say what?”

“Om. I understand the ejaculation to be Om.  And there are very curious physical exercises; you have to hold your ear with one hand and your toes with the other, and you may strain yourself unless you do it properly.  That was the general gist of it.”
