My First Computer

My first computer was a 386, which had just come out and was just barely starting to replace the 286's. It had a 40-meg hard drive, with 12 megs of that already taken up by MS-DOS. I felt like a pig in mud, having that much "free" hard drive space.

iPods in the 1960's

    Yes, we could record and store music back in the late 1960's.  On cassette tapes.  By laying the microphone close to the stereo speakers.  And vainly trying to keep background noise to a minimum.

    We could also play computer games.  Well, only one - a text-based Star Trek game.  And you had to ask the TA in charge of the computer lab at ASU to (wink wink) give you access to it.  For the most part, you "flew" around in sectors of empty space.  Until you crossed paths with a Romulan ship, which usually beat the schnark out of your puny Federation phasers, photon torpedoes, and shields.

Printer Woes

Something quick, as I'm having major issues with my printer this evening. It's about to get its butt tossed out the window.

Computer Store Trivia Question

Once upon a time, there was a Babbage's at the nearby shopping mall. It sold computer software - especially computer games - and was a great place to hang out while Liz was shopping at the mall. . Alas, Babbage's is long gone, as are almost all other PC gaming stores. The trivia question is - for whom is Babbage's named? And why? And while we're at it, when did he live? I know I'm showing my age, but IMNSHO, PC Gaming (and that includes things like Xbox, PlayStation, and NES) is the pits nowadays. I was looking at PS3 games yesterday, and 95% of them are either mindless hack-&-slash, or sports games. Sid Meier, where are you now? Link, we need you to go on another quest.
