Delusional skeptic, reveling in a multiple-personality disorder. Alternating between a 21st-century blogger, a 3rd-century BC Carthagenian general, a 5th-century BC druid, a 23rd-century BC Beaker-people trader, a 20th-century Estonian freedom-fighter, a time-traveler, and a sheepdog in Wyoming.
What do John Denver, Mac Davis, Buffalo Springfield, the Doobie Brothers, and Steely Dan have in common? (Hint : it has something to do with the band pictured above).
.(Answer given in the comments)
sadly, they're before your time. their music was an excellent blend of folk, bluegrass, C&W, and rock. very similar to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, who are best known for the song Mr. Bojangles. alas, the NGDB may be before your time too.
Mason Proffit broke up in the early 70's after the two frontmen, who were brothers, both found religion. what makes that unique is that one became a Roman Catholic monk, while the other became a born-again Christian.
Are you sure about Buffalo Springfield? They disbanded in May, 1968. While I don't know when Mason Proffit initially got together, I don't believe Wanted was issued until some time in 1969.
Oh, I see that is from Wiki. And that Buffalo Springfield was only added to the list a month ago. Odd...
you're right about the timing being off. by 1968, when Mason Proffit was forming, Buffalo Springfield was both big-time and splitting up.
the only thing i can think of is that we are talking about a travesty called "The New Buffalo Springfield". Wikipedia talks about two of these incarnations in their article on BS. they definitely would've been small-time.
OTOH, it's possible the Wikipedia MP article is simply wrong. perish the thought! Wiki is the source of all my knowledge. ;-)

Answer : they all were opening acts at various times for one of my favorite, but short-lived bands - Mason Proffit.
I've never even heard of them. :/
