New FTC Rule for Bloggers
Effective today, the FTC has mandated that all bloggers must disclose any freebies and/or payment we receive to give testimonials. You can read MSNBC.com's article on it here.

I think the panic over this new law is ridiculous. I mean, if I get a free book from a publisher, I'm going to say that anyway, and it's really not like people are going to turn away from my blog if I do. And then, if I don't report it, what is the FTC going to do? How will they even know I got it for free?

I say who cares? It's impossible to regulate because people lie.
i really don't see it impacting any of us "amateur" bloggers. i think they are after people who write blogs for, say, the NY Times, or Amazon.com, or Consumer Reports.
ReplyDeletepersonally, i've always regarded those blogs as just a publicity stunt anyway. does anybody really believe Management at those places doesn't tell the ersatz blogger exactly what to write? ditto for corporate Twitterers.
